Jack Layton keynote speaker at annual OPSEU Convention
TORONTO - Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton will be keynote speaker at the annual convention of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union in Toronto, April 15-17.
Layton joins UN AIDS envoy Stephen Lewis and women’s activist Judy Rebick as highlight speakers for the 1,500 OPSEU members expected to attend the Convention, to be held at the Sheraton Centre Hotel.
“Jack Layton is showing the exciting, issue-based leadership we need to counter the corporate agenda of the federal Liberal and Conservative Parties,” said OPSEU President Leah Casselman. “He shares our values of commitment to public services and the betterment of working people.”
Stephen Lewis will present the first-annual OPSEU “Live and Let Live Award,” which is given to OPSEU Locals who contribute to a special OPSEU fund to combat HIV/AIDS in African countries.
· Jack Layton will address the Convention on Friday, April 16, at 1.30 p.m., Sheraton Ballroom.
· Judy Rebick will speak to the OPSEU Women’s Breakfast, Friday at 7:30 a.m., Dominion Ballroom
· Stephen Lewis will address the OPSEU Awards Banquet, Friday at 8 p.m., Sheraton Ballroom
OPSEU represents about 100,000 public sector workers in Ontario, including employees of the provincial government, community colleges, hospitals, municipalities and community agencies.
