TORONTO: Toronto’s Youth Employment Service (Y.E.S.) is set to lock out its staff over Christmas after management requested a no-board report Dec. 5.
Last month, the staff voted 94 per cent to go on strike if necessary. The strike deadline could be as early as 12:01 Dec.22 for members of OPSEU Local 512.
“The spectre of a Christmas lockout shows the Dickensian labour practices of this employer,” said David Smaller, chief steward. “On top of this, they are trying to Scrooge us by rolling back already low salaries.”
“Our members are already struggling to make ends meet in the City of Toronto. We’re looking for respect from this employer and a living wage,” said Smaller.
The local represents 20 employment consultants and counsellors who link young people with employment prospects. Salaries for professionals are $36,000 or less at YES, where staff are looking for their first contract.
Intimidation, bad faith, and retraction of agreed items have punctuated negotiations to date.
