Public forum in Toronto to talk about mental health services

Toronto – The union representing employees at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) will sponsor a community forum on mental health services in the city:

Date: Tuesday, April 29
Time: 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Place: Trinity Community Recreation Centre,155 Crawford Street (south end of Trinity Bellwoods Park, at Crawford St. and Queen St.)

“The talk from the provincial government and hospital administrators is ‘client-centred care’ and a ‘seamless continuum of care’ and the reality has been waiting lists and program cuts,” said Nancy Pridham, president, Local 500 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).

Admission to the forum is free. The public is welcome.

Speakers include:

· Dr. Ruth Berman, Executive Director, Ontario Psychological Association
· Heinz Klein, Consumer-Survivor activist
· Danielle Koyama, Community Mental Health Drop-In Worker and Activist
· Manuel Lorenzo, Community Mental Health Programs, Toronto Western Hospital
· Joe Wright, Lawyer, Mental Health Court, Toronto
· A representative from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
· Nancy Pridham, president, Local 500, and Executive Board Member, OPSEU

The moderator is Rosario Marchese, NDP MPP, Trinity-Spadina.

In November, OPSEU released a report, Reality: Ontario’s Mental Health Care System Isn’t Working. The report details cuts to mental health services across Ontario and is available at: http://www.opseu.org/bps/health/mental/index.htm
