OPSEU holds annual Convention in Toronto
More than 1,500 delegates and observers will attend the 28th annual Convention of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, to be held at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto, April 3-5, 2003.
OPSEU represents about 100,000 employees of the Ontario government, all of Ontario’s community colleges, and more than 500 hospitals, ambulance services, school boards, municipalities, social service agencies and private corporations.
Leah Casselman will seek an unprecedented fifth two-year term as OPSEU president. Casselman, a Correctional Officer at the Syl Apps young offender facility in Oakville, was first elected president in 1995. Casselman is being challenged by Robert Eaton, a Probation and Parole Officer from Prescott, Ont. The election will
take place Friday, April 3.
Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton will address delegates on Friday at 1.30 p.m.
The union’s prestigious Stanley H. Knowles Humanitarian Award will be presented at a banquet Friday evening to Joy Phumaphi, health minister of Botswana, for her work in combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic in her country.
The Convention runs each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
