OPSEU conducts information pickets, worksite inspections at area landfill sites

TORONTO - OPSEU strikers who normally work for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment will be conducting information pickets and worksite inspections at two Toronto-area landfill sites.

Date: Wednesday, March 27, 2002
Time: 8:00 a.m.
Location #1: Scarborough Waste Transfer Station ,Nugget Avenue, one block north of Sheppard Ave. at Markham Rd.
Contact: Myron Zurawsky (647) 282-8636 (cell)
Location #2: Keele Valley Landfill site (north of Major Mackenzie)
Contact: Rob Ryan or Celeste Dugas (416) 272-9106

When not on strike, OPSEU members employed by the Ministry of Environment (MoE) ensure that hazardous and non-hazardous wastes are safely transported, processed and disposed of. Illegal dumping can contaminate groundwater, surface water, and air, with serious consequences for human health and the environment.

Cuts and layoffs in the MoE mean that “We no longer have enough people to ensure that waste disposal is safely managed,” said Myron Zurawsky of OPSEU Local 555.
