TORONTO - The Ontario Public Service Employees Union will demand
the withdrawal of Bill 58, The
Ambulance Services Collective Bargaining Act, at a news
conference on Monday.
Date: Monday, June 11, 2001
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Place: Media Studio, Main Legislative Building, Queen's Park,
TORONTO
Unlike legislation for other emergency services workers, Bill 58
will not prevent strikes or lockouts. The bill will force paramedics
to go on strike in order to try to get binding interest arbitration.
OPSEU president Leah Casselman will host the press conference along
with representatives of OPSEU’s Ambulance Division Executive. OPSEU
represents paramedics at more than 20 service locations across
Ontario.
“Bill 58 is a threat to public safety and it should be withdrawn,”
says Casselman. “The government should give paramedics the same
right to binding interest arbitration as fire, police and hospital
workers. This is what the public wants, and it’s what the paramedics
want. If the government insists on ramming the bill through this
session, it should at the very least amend the bill to ensure public
safety.”
