Casselman faces
challengers
TORONTO – OPSEU President Leah Casselman faces two challengers in
her bid for re-election at the union’s annual convention, Thursday
through Saturday at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto.
Vying for the top spot in 100,000-member union in addition to
Casselman are North Bay assessment officer Will Presley and Prescott
area probation officer Bob Eaton.
In addition to elections, the convention will award the union’s
highest honour, the Stanley Knowles Humanitarian Award, to social
activist and diplomat Stephen Lewis. It will also honour all the members
who worked in a wide variety of ways to fight the E-coli epidemic in
Walkerton.
About 1,400 delegates and others are expected at the convention, to
debate the union’s internal policies and set its direction for the
coming year.
Convention highlights are scheduled as follows:
Casselman’s opening address – Thursday, about 9:30 a.m.
Presidential elections – Friday, 9 a.m.
Special Walkerton presentation – Friday morning during ballot
counting
The Stanley Knowles presentation – Saturday, 11:30 a.m.
