TORONTO - 200 current and former Ontario municipalities have officially
voiced their opposition to the Harris government’s plan to privatize
provincial jails. Municipal councils have passed resolutions supporting
publicly run correctional services, and are asking the Ontario government
to ensure that correctional facilities are fully accountable and staffed
by professional, publicly employed correctional officers.
Leah Casselman, president of the Ontario Public Service Employees
Union, says that this is a message that the Tory government shouldn’t
ignore.
“These councils are the grass roots leadership of the people of
Ontario,” Casselman said. “The 200 municipalities cover every part of
this province. That’s a lot of voting power come election time.”
In November 1999, the government announced that it intended to
privatize the newly constructed 1,200-bed superjail in Penetanguishene.
Since that time, the small town of 8,000 has been vigorously fighting for
a public facility.
