The Ontario Public Service Employees Union has won a
major vote to represent more than 500 hospital health care professionals
working at the newly-merged Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation.
"This once again proves that OPSEU is the
choice for hospital professionals across Ontario," OPSEU President
Leah Casselman told a victory celebration today. "Without essential
paramedical professionals, doctors would only be guessing at their
diagnoses."
The union representation vote for technologists,
technicians and therapists was held April 18-19 as a result of the merger
of the Henderson, McMaster, Chedoke and Hamilton General hospitals.
OPSEU previously represented the technologists,
technicians and therapists at two of the hospitals prior to the vote, but
was outnumbered by the Canadian Union of Public Employees. Despite this,
the workers voted for OPSEU to represent them.
"Health care professionals are the
underpinnings of our health care system," Casselman said. "They
make it possible for accurate diagnoses and treatment. Without them,
doctors would be only guessing."
OPSEU represents more than 20,000 health care
professionals across the province.
