OAKVILLE - Leah Casselman, president of the Ontario Public Service
Employees Union, says she is looking forward to continuing a “productive
relationship” between the union and the not-for-profit Kinark Child
and Family Services.
Casselman, a youth correctional officer, found out Friday that
Kinark will be her new employer as soon as the work of the Syl Apps
Youth Centre in Oakville is transferred out of the Ontario Ministry of
Community and Social Services.
OPSEU intends to be the bargaining agent for employees under the
new management structure, Casselman said.
“We already represent staff at Kinark in Simcoe County, and we’ve
been on good terms with management there,” she said. “Certainly
Kinark is accustomed to dealing with unions. From what we’ve seen
they seem to understand the link between quality jobs and quality
services for young people at risk.”
