TORONTO – Paramedical staff at the Niagara Health
System have voted by a clear margin to be represented by the Ontario
Public Service Employees Union.
The vote, counted Thursday, means OPSEU has
representation rights for 488 staff at the health system, created from
amalgamation of eight hospitals in Niagara on the Lake, Port Colborne,
Niagara Falls, Welland, Fort Erie, St. Catharines and Thorold.
The group includes laboratory technologists, x-ray
technologists, physiotherapists and other paramedical professionals.
OPSEU had previously represented these employees at the Greater
Niagara and Welland County General Hospitals.
OPSEU President Leah Casselman welcomed the new
members into the union. "Their decision confirms OPSEU as the
union of choice for hospital paramedical workers in Ontario. We know
their work and we have the expertise and commitment to give them
top-flight representation," Casselman said.
