On March 8-9, 2011, the theatre at OPSEU’s
head office buzzed with activity as 24 New Presidents
attended a two-day orientation session. This orientation had
participants from the different Regions in Ontario, coming
together to learn how OPSEU functions and what their new
roles and responsibilities entail. The participants
represented members from the Ontario Public Service, the
Broader Public Services as well as the College of Applied
Arts and Technology
The new presidents had the opportunity to
meet with staff from ten different units who offered advice
and strategies on dealing with everyday issues such as
grievances and effective communication. Using case studies
encompassing human rights, health and safety and duty to
accommodate issues, participants strategized on handling
difficult situations, listening effectively and resolving
issues in their locals.
Learning from each other, the new presidents
shared their tips for recruiting new stewards, keeping their
members united and challenging unfair management practices.
These tips included focusing on education, building on
honesty, following the collective agreement and offering
mentorship opportunities as well as incentives to keep
members involved.
Presidents were officially sworn in by Peggy
Maybury, Executive Assistant to President Smokey Thomas.
The next New Presidents’ Orientation will be
in June, 2011.
