December 16, 2010
On December 7th and 8th, 22 new presidents attended
the Orientation for New Local Presidents training in Toronto. New
presidents came together with the goals of increasing their
knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the local president
and gaining a greater understanding of how head office and the
regional offices function. Additionally the participants wished to
develop proactive strategies for building an involved and supportive
membership, strengthening their local executive, and dealing with
their employers.
During the two packed days the local presidents met
representatives from many of OPSEU’s departments and took a tour of
head office. Participants and OPSEU staff shared ideas and
approaches on how to access assistance with needs such as
newsletters, health and safety, membership lists, equity, and
finances. One member noted that this was particularly valuable as it
allowed for an opportunity to put faces to names that used to only
be voices on the phone.
As in the past, networking and sharing of ideas and
strategies were two of the most valuable experiences noted by the
participants. Strategies were developed around the orientation of
new stewards, gaining management’s respect, and pulling members
together to challenge unfair management tactics. Many of the
presidents remarked on the value of being able to talk with one
another and learn from the vast experience in the room.
The two days concluded with President Thomas
speaking with the participants and answering questions about current
issues facing OPSEU. President Thomas thanked the participants for
the valuable work that they do, passed out their certificates for
participating in the training, and led the swearing-in ceremony.
