Member Development Trainee (MDT)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Membership Development Trainee Program?

The MDT (Membership Development Trainee) program was created to provide opportunities for OPSEU members from all sectors to experience what working with OPSEU would be like. It’s also meant to develop a pool of qualified and experienced applicants for a variety of staff vacancies that come up from time to time at OPSEU.

Why is OPSEU offering these training opportunities?

As is the case with most organizations, in addition to the regular staff turnover, OPSEU may be experiencing significant staff retirements over the next decade. The program will help improve the skills of activists. This program should assist OPSEU in training potential staff members.

Who is eligible to participate?

Any OPSEU member in good standing may apply for one of these positions. In addition, a number of positions will be offered to current OPSEU staff that may wish to develop their skills.

How many positions are available?

Positions are being planned in all OPSEU regions across the province. Some opportunities for development for current staff will also be provided.

How will participants be chosen?

The application process will be as follows: 1.Interested members are asked to fill out an online application outlining their experience and skills; 2. After an initial review of the applications, a number of members will be asked to proceed to the next level by completing an online prescreen questionnaire.  This will take place from June 11-June 15; candidates must be available to complete the questionnaire during that time. 3. The results of the prescreen will be reviewed and a number of members will be interviewed. 4. Successful candidates will be advised.

What can I expect the training to be about?

All successful applicants will receive significant training in negotiations and bargaining, serving members and developing union locals. In addition, all MDTs will be completing assignments during their employment and will learn to use a number of online and computer services.

How is the leave from my regular work arranged?

Successful applicants will need to contact their employer regarding a leave. Staff Relations will assist in this process.

When does the program start?

All MDTs are expected to start September 10 and the program will continue for 12 weeks until November 30. During that time, it will not be possible to approve vacations or time off from the training program. Therefore, applicants need to ensure that they are available for the entire planned time for the training.

I’ve never done a resume before, what are you looking for?

There are many kinds of resumes. What we are looking for is information about your skills and experiences that will indicate how you could contribute within OPSEU as a workplace. Here is a sample of a simple resume format which would be acceptable. .doc format   .pdf format
