Government pledge to keep LCBO public: Let's see it in the contract, Greg
Ontario Finance Minister Greg Sorbara's pledge to keep the LCBO in public hands and reject the Lacey Report's major recommendation is a step forward.
But it does not change one bit the offer the LCBO made last week to our bargaining team. That's the offer you are voting on. We asked you to reject that offer and that recommendation stands.
Let's see it in writing
Our message to the Liberal government and the LCBO is very simple now: if you have no plans to privatize further the services provided by the LCBO, let's see it in the contract language you are offering us at the bargaining table.
The Lacey Report, released today, recommends full-scale contracting out of the LCBO on a regional basis, will not fly with the people of Ontario. Greg Sorbara knows that and the Liberals are not prepared to go down that road.
But the Liberals have broken promises before. And what's to stop a future government from going there if the Liberals don't?
So far, we haven't seen the language we need to see at the table.
If the government really has no intention of privatizing the LCBO, they should have no problem agreeing to our proposals for permanent protection of all LCBO staff against layoffs resulting from privatization including agency stores.
Since the government says it has no intention to privatize, the LCBO really has no reason not to offer us a better deal at the table.
A better deal IS possible!
By voting "No" to the employer's offer - and authorizing a strike, if necessary - you can give our team the bargaining power to get a better deal that protects all our members against the threat of privatization-both now and in the future.
