Over the past weeks the best of OPSEU was again in view. The work done by many OPSEU members and staff to support the new Liquor Board Employees Division during a brief 5 week period transformed this 5,400 member division into a force to be reckoned with. This speedy transformation quickly put a lot of pressure onto their employer. The scope of the transformation pushed the LCBO towards settlement at the bargaining table. The result was a measure of this success as was the ratification vote that followed. The settlement provides a strong base from which we can build an even stronger division in the years to come. Equally important is the energy and activism that has been injected by this process into the division. Over 30 member mobilizers worked throughout the province, gaining both experience and commitment through their face-to-face work with the membership. These efforts reached a peak during a strike preparation meeting on Sunday, July 24th when mobilizers joined selected local members, staff, and the RVPs to make final preparations. Through the mobilization period many Division members took significant steps towards leadership. This will pay off in the months to come, as the Transition Committee works to complete the merger by building stronger locals. OPSEU staff and members frequently come together to transform working lives across Ontario. This was another example. It was our most recent successful internal organizing campaign. It is therefore important for OPSEU to acknowledge the members and staff that contributed to the effort. On behalf of both the Division and OPSEU as a whole thank you! ____________________________ __________________________ Leah Casselman, President John Coones, Division Chair
