TITLE: GRIEVANCE OFFICER (Bilingual)

LOCATION: Contract Enforcement Unit 100 Lesmill Rd., Toronto, Ontari

REPORTING TO: Supervisor, Contract Enforcement Unit Policy Planning and Programs Division

SALARY: $1,458 to $1,623 per week (Range 4, Appendix A)

WORKING CONDITIONS: As provided in the OPSSU Collective Agreement

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Represent OPSEU and its members by preparing and presenting grievances and complaints before quasi-judicial tribunals or forums.

  • Prepare witnesses and conduct examination in chief or cross of witnesses.

  • Meets with LEC’s, grievors and management representatives with a view to settling complaints and grievances to a grievor’s satisfaction.

  • Guides and instructs outside counsel.

  • Co-ordinates and administrates grievances and complaints in the area of responsibility.

  • Represent OPSEU and its members in a variety of special assignments, which may be delegated directly from the Administrator or President’s office.

  • Provides specialized advice to OPSEU staff and members concerning the merits of grievances and complaints.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires a three-year undergraduate degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) and three years of related work experience with demonstrated advocacy skills and a history of representing members in the workplace.

  • Requires formal and informal updating of knowledge of labour and related legislation and legislative changes, case law, collective agreement language, grievance/arbitration procedures and practices.

  • requires advanced communication skills in French (written and oral);

  • Requires a demonstrated commitment to Labour/Social Democratic philosophy.
