TITLE: STAFF REPRESENTATIVE (#11)

LOCATION: Kingston Regional Office.  920 Princess Street, Suite 102.  Kingston, Ontario K7L 1H1

REPORTING TO: Supervisor (Regions 3 & 4), Local Services

SALARY: $1,532 to 1,705 per week (Range 4, Appendix A)

WORKING CONDITIONS: As provided in the OPSSU Collective Agreement

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Represents members, units and locals as Bargaining Agent in bargaining or dispute resolution forums in an advocacy/spokesperson role.

  • Provides expert advice/opinion to temporary staff and members re. bargaining/ dispute resolution issues.

  • Negotiates contracts and other agreements.

  • Develops and writes contract/dispute settlement language.

  • Develops new, innovative bargaining/dispute resolution strategies and positions.

  • Researches and prepares arguments and proposals for Collective Agreement.

  • Provides servicing support to organizing/re-organizing campaigns.

  • Provides leadership and expertise to members in strike preparation and strikes.

  • Provides leadership in development of strong active locals and positive links within the labour community.

  • Develops, prepares and presents educational programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The position requires a person of mature judgement with a strong background of practical experience in advocacy skills, leadership, research, verbal and written communication, negotiations skills; ability to relate well with people; ability to deal diplomatically and persuasively with LEC's; willingness to work irregular hours and travel extensively throughout Ontario.

  • Requires undergraduate degree (or equivalent combination education and experience) and four years of related work experience

  • Requires formal/informal experience involving advocacy and a demonstrated commitment to Labour/Social Democratic Philosophy.

  • Requires computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office, email and Collective Agreement databases.

  • Requires continuous formal/informal updating on bargaining trends, settlements, labour and other related legislation, arbitration awards and software packages.
