TITLE: Librarian/Information Specialist (29)

REPORTING TO: Administrator, Communications Division

LOCATION:   Public and Government Affairs Unit 100 Lesmill Road, Toronto

SALARY: $1,474 to $1,675 (Range 3, Appendix A)

WORKING CONDITIONS: As provided in the OPSSU Collective Agreement

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

To provide an effective, high quality and proactive information service to OPSEU and its members by delivering specialized research and reference assistance, developing and maintaining a print and electronic collection that gives access to the information that library users need. Developing short and long term plans for the library and maintaining an awareness of emerging and current trends impacting the provision of information services.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Responds to information requests received by the library by determining the most appropriate means of acquiring the information needed.

  • Identifies, evaluates and assembles suitable material for OPSEU and its members from a variety of print and electronic research tools, including a wide range of web-based resources. Provides thorough, complete and accurate information.

  • Develops and maintains an updated and accurate catalogue of the materials housed in the library and in the OPSEU archives.

  • Establishes appropriate library policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for preparing budget estimates and overall monitoring of the library budget.

  • Cultivates partnerships with other libraries for reciprocal lending and resource sharing.

  • Makes users and potential users aware of the services and programs offered by the library.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Information degree or one to three years related experience providing information services in a specialized library environment.

  • Able to negotiate reference and research queries and to identify and evaluate the best information resources in order to answer requests.

  • Familiarity with library research tools and a high degree of literacy in electronic and print resources relevant to a union/industrial relations library.

  • Good knowledge of collection development and management.

  • Good knowledge of web design and web 2.0 tools and social media and understands how best to apply them in the provision of library and information services.

  • Able to set priorities in a complex and fast-paced environment with conflicting demands and time pressures.

  • Requires knowledge of OPSEU organization and structure.

  • Requires demonstrated commitment to Labour/Social Democratic Philosophy.
