RSI Day: Friday Feb 27, 2009

Imagine not being able to lift your children or continue leisure activities you’ve always enjoyed—all caused from repetitive strain injury (RSI) pain originating from the workplace.

Friday February 27, 2009 marks the 10th annual “RSI Day,” a day when workers and unions gather to call for a stop to these preventable injuries.  Not much has changed from ten years ago when one injured worker stood up to call for prevention of these debilitating workplace injuries.

With over 40% of WSIB claims, the sheer number of RSI injuries in Ontario demonstrates that workers cannot rely on voluntary employer actions alone—such as the “MSD Guideline” to prevent these injuries.  No worker should have to hear what many workers hear from their doctors, “Get used to the pain, because it is part of life now.”

The best way for Ontario to get employers to begin to address these injuries in a comprehensive way is to enact legislation that forces employers to adopt work practices that will not sentence workers to a life of pain.  Such legislation will also raise awareness about the debilitating effect of these injuries so that Ontario workers’ health will not always fall second to the cost of doing business.

Join workers, unions and organizations in Toronto, Sudbury, and Windsor for a day of information and action to explore the impact of these injuries and call for the legislation needed to prevent these crippling injuries that thousands of workers across Ontario needlessly suffer from.
