What Does the Health and Safety Unit Do?

The H&S Unit provides:

  • Training and Education: develops training materials for delivery at the local union and regional level;
  • Research: conducts secondary research on workplace hazards, diseases and control measures as well as workplace health surveys.
  • Information: provides updated information on various workplace hazards, effective control measures, and health and safety legislative and regulatory issues. This information is normally provided through our various booklets and hazard alerts as well as in response to requests from locals, members and staff. Information is used to fight for more effective control measures, for grievances and collective bargaining, to determine member accommodation needs and to support worker compensation claims;
  • Regulatory and Legislative Development: monitors current regulatory developments and lobbies for more protective health and safety legislation;
  • Advocacy: advocates on behalf of workers before various health and safety agencies and administrative bodies.

The Health and Safety Unit is staffed by two health and safety officers at OPSEU Head Office.
