COMMUNITY RESIDENTS INVITED TO CLINICS

As you may be aware, people who work at the Macdonald-Cartier Building have experienced a large number of illnesses including cancers. Some evidence suggests that it may be linked to toxic waste under the building and in the general area. We also believe that residents that live and work in the area may also be at risk or may be experiencing similar health problems.

Our union recently requested assistance from the Occupational Health Clinic for Ontario Workers (OHCOW) to investigate these environment-related health problems.

The Occupational Health Clinic for Ontario Workers (OHCOW) has agreed to hold a series of intake clinics for past and present employees who worked at the contaminated Macdonald-Cartier Building (MCB).

Residents who live and work in the general area around the building are also invited to participate in the clinics since they are likely exposed to the same contaminants. The next series of clinics will be held at the following times and locations:

Friday September 19, 2003 at 105 Sutherland Drive, 1:00 PM TO 8:00 PM (Steelworkers’ Hall in Greenridge Plaza, corner of Sutherland Drive and Montreal Street)

Saturday September 20, 2003 at 105 Sutherland Drive, 9:00 AM TO 4:00 PM (Steelworkers’ Hall in Greenridge Plaza, corner of Sutherland Drive and Montreal Street

The purpose of the clinics is to document and confirm the extent and type of illnesses that both residents and workers have experienced as a result of exposure to the toxic waste in this area. The clinics are not meant to replace people’s family doctors. It is meant to investigate whether there may be a connection with the contaminants and illnesses. Such investigation is also helpful for further clean-up and prevention. All personal medical information will be held in strict confidence.

OHCOW CLINICS ARE IMPORTANT

A recent study confirms the presence of these substances in the building and surrounding area. We can’t emphasise enough the need to document these illnesses. Other clinics will be made available and a schedule posted shortly.
