OPSEU Convention 2004 Resolution

POLITICAL ACTION

WHEREAS OPSEU is committed to promoting labour and social-democratic principles throughout society, including an active role in the electoral process: and

WHEREAS the New Democratic Party shares this commitment and recognizes its historic and enduring relationship to the labour movement: and

WHEREAS the traditional relationship between the labour movement and the New Democratic Party is currently being examined and revised following the passage of Federal Bill C-24, legislation that effectively prevents unions and corporations from directly supporting any political party.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT this Convention defers debate on a Political Action policy – including affiliation to the New Democratic Party – until such a time as the Party, in consultation with the labour movement, has developed and approved a viable mechanism to continue our historic relationship; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT OPSEU, in conjunction with the national Union, will participate in this process of consultation and debate within the New Democratic Party and the labour movement; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT OPSEU encourages its members to actively support the New Democratic Party of Canada in the upcoming federal election.
