Convention 2009 opens with a flourish
Convention
2009 began this year with a powerful performance by Sharon Riley and Faith
Chorale. The choir performed Stand By Me and a special rendition of the song
Keep Your Eyes on the Prize, the theme of this year’s Convention.
Toronto Mayor David Miller welcomed members to Convention,
saying he was delighted to have OPSEU in Toronto. Miller said he was
privileged to be the Mayor of Toronto during tough economic time, and said
now is the time to invest in human services and green initiatives.
“When
you do the right thing for the environment, you do the right thing for the
economy,” he said.
Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath greeted members saying she
was honoured to address the Convention. Horwath, who is a Hamilton native,
praised Toronto but also invited the members to experience “the great city
just 45 minutes away.”
John
Cartwright, President of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council and
members of UNITE HERE Local 75 (representing workers at the Sheraton Hotel)
also welcomed the delegates.
Smokey
Thomas addressed the Convention members by telling them OPSEU is a dynamic
union and continues to be the union of choice across Ontario. “Unions are
what made this country great and the fight continues for better wages and
working conditions.” Thomas said. He also thanked activists and staff for
the incredible work they do for the union. “Without the volunteers, staff
and the support of our family members we couldn’t do what we do.”
Convention
adjourned at 11:20 a.m. so members could join a CAW pension rally at Queen’s
Park. Just prior to adjournment, the new OPSEU flag was unveiled. New
delegates from each of the seven regions presented the new flags to their
Regional Vice-Presidents.
