Three OPSEU members received honourary lifetime membership awards.

Sharon Armes and daughter Nicole (top left) accepted the award on behalf of husband and father Gord Armes, who died in January 2002 after a valiant battle with cancer. Gord, president of Local 207 in Oakville, was a tower of strength as chair of the OPSEU Ambulance Division. He was just 50 when he died.

Terry Connolly’s wife Sally (top right) accepted the lifetime membership award on his behalf. Terry was a stalwart activist for the union in Region 7. His work with the union went from the “Free the Servants” campaign in 1974 to the OPS strike in 2002. First elected to the OPSEU Executive Board in 1977, Terry served for 20 years before taking two terms off for ill health. He was re-elected in 2001 and served until his death last Oct. 11.

Tony Carneiro (bottom middle) served OPSEU as a member of Locals 523 and 599 since he joined the Ontario Public Service in 1977. Tony was a Local executive member, a founding member of the Toronto East Area Council, and an early supporter of women’s and human rights at work and in the union. He led his members on picket lines and reached out to other workers through his work with the Labour Council of Toronto and York Region. Tony is an active retiree.

Activist Dudley Laws accepted the Rainford Jackson Education and Development Fund award on behalf of the Black Action Defense Committee. The Committee is a voluntary non-profit community group whose goal is to eliminate racism and discrimination in the criminal justice system

The Stanley Knowles Humanitarian Award, OPSEU’s highest award, went to the Honourable Joy Phumaphi. As Minister of Health for Botswana, Ms. Phumaphi has led a war against HIV/AIDS in her country. Her fight helped inspire OPSEU’s decision to adopt HIV/AIDS as the union’s international issue. Dr. Phumaphi was unable to attend Convention but she sent her thanks to delegates via a video satellite feed.
