Convention 2009 Update

"Keep your eyes on the Prize"
CAW President says labour unions must come together
April 27, 2009
CAW National President Ken Lewenza passionately addressed attendees on
the final day of Convention 2009. He thanked OPSEU’s Executive Board for
their hand of friendship and act of solidarity.
Lewenza was particularly grateful for OPSEU’s show of support at the CAW
Pension Rally at Queen’s Park on Thursday, April 23. “It was the day the
labour movement got its act together and walked in solidarity,” Lewenza
said. The rally was held to demand stronger pension protection that will
allow retirees to retire with dignity and security. The rally was
organized after Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced that there may not
be enough money in the pension guarantee fund for GM retirees, should the
corporation go bankrupt.
“CAW is fighting the fight for all of us and doing it admirably,” said
OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas.
Lewenza was in Toronto to support negotiations between the union and
Chrysler LLC in reaching a tentative deal that may prevent the auto giant
from declaring bankruptcy.
