· OPSEU members from various workplaces and walks of life.
· Inclusive to all who are 30 years of age and under.
· The FUTURE of OPSEU.
What we do:
· Promote youth involvement in the union.
· Advocate and educate around youth and union issues.
· Create a safe environment to share experiences and knowledge.
· Support and network with similarly employed youth.
· Organize for action to protect our youth and future.
· Create a stronger, smarter and more active union for everyone.
Young workers along with people of colour, aboriginals, immigrants, gays, lesbians and transgendered are amongst the most vulnerable workers in Canada. Often they don’t know their civil rights or their rights as
workers and this makes them vulnerable.
Our goal is to promote involvement and education whenever and wherever possible to stem the tide of oppression and adversity.
Who belongs to OPSEU
OPSEU represents 100,000 members in hundreds of workplaces across Ontario, including the provincial government, hospitals, community colleges, and social service and cultural agencies. We are your paramedics, registered
practical nurses, library technicians, developmental services workers, child protection workers, laboratory technologists, clerical staff, food services workers, community college teachers, maintenance workers, probation and parole officers,
conservation officers and many other professions!
What we do as a Union
We negotiate contracts (collective agreements) that include:
Wages
Benefits and paid sick leave
Vacation pay
Job security
Health and safety protection
Maternity leave top-up
A grievance procedure to resolve issues and violations of the collective agreement
Safeguards for part-time and casual workers (including pay in lieu of benefits and vacation)
Pay equity
Pensions or RRSPs
But unions are about more than just helping their own members! We work with community groups and other unions to fight against racism, harassment and other forms of discrimination, and to fight for a more equitable
and just society.
