Equity at
OPSEU
The
Provincial Equity Committees and Caucuses aim to secure OPSEU’s
future in the labour movement by reflecting demographic change
within the union. What are their major goals?
1. Encouraging
greater participation for equality-seeking groups at the local
and all other decision-making levels,
2. Highlighting
issues of particular concern to their constituent members
3. Working with
other equity-seeking groups to strengthen the “equity” voice and
commitment in the union
Members of
the Committees and Caucuses participate in a wide-range of work
to promote OPSEU’s name and reputation as a defender of equity
and human rights. Some examples of their current work include:
-
Acting as
advisors and investigators under the Harassment and
Discrimination policy
-
Seeking out
members to run as stewards and officers
-
Identifying
and dissolving barriers that block equity-seeking groups from
participating in the Union
-
Organizing
educationals on relevant topics, or review existing educations
for equity barriers.
-
Demonstrating OPSEU’s commitment to equality by attending and
participating in community-based events
-
·Creating
resources and providing information about equity issues to the
general membership (through website, educational materials and
pamphlets)
-
Drafting and
lobbying to advance Equity-related resolutions at Convention
-
Actively
pursuing internal Equity Campaign issues by lobbying local
politicians, educating community groups, writing letters etc.
The groups
are always looking for involvement at every level. For more
