Celebrate Youth!
On August 12th, International Youth Day (IYD), youth
around the world celebrate their accomplishments and aspirations. This day gives
us an opportunity to reflect on the potential that youth bring to our
organizations in the form of innovative ideas and energy. It is also a time to
plan for ways to better engage young people and cultivate their leadership so
that they can successfully take action in the development of their societies.
This year, the theme is “Be Seen, Be Heard: Youth
Participation for Development”. The theme suggests that we focus us on the
importance of facilitating youth participation in decision-making related to
global issues such as sustainable development and the environment, poverty
reduction and equitable trade and migration policies.
We, the Young Workers Committee (PYC), would like to
take this opportunity to encourage young activists to come out to your next
educational, regional youth caucus or local meeting in your region. This is a
great way to learn more about your union, become a leader and affect
decision-making at all levels.
The PYC encourages all members to celebrate
International Youth Day in your regions. Here are a couple of events you can
attend:
-
Region 2: Sunday August 12th from 3:00pm -
6:00pm. At Meaford Memorial Park. BBQ, volleyball, live music, art, and fun
in the sun. All free. For ages 12-20. Family members welcome!
-
Region 5: Sunday, August 19th at 296
Brunswick Avenue, 12:00pm-4:30pm. An afternoon of movies and fun with an NGO
fair, Art Exhibit and Film screening at The Brunswick Theatre.
