The Workers of Colour Caucus
has identified the following strategic areas for organizing,
educating and empowering racialized members, the OPSEU community
and other relevant communities and coalitions:
Living wall now the Census
For the past five years, the
Workers of Colour have tracked the participation and involvement
of racialized members in the union through the Living Wall
Project. The project pre-dated the development of the OPSEU
Social Mapping, and Workers of Colour were instrumental in
lobbying for the more extensive demographic census project
currently being conducted at OPSEU. For more information about
the Living Wall project (please place link here to the tab “the
Living Wall” currently to be found on the WOCC home page)
Coulouring our Path: Member
Profiles/Biographies
“Colouring the Path” Project
is a biographical project that aims to document the
contributions of Workers of Colour at OPSEU. The project also
endeavours to serve as a stimulus and focal point of the history
and contributions of Workers of Colour to the labour movement
and human rights generally.
Convention Caucus
Each year, Workers of Colour
have a Caucus meeting at OPSEU Convention to encourage new
members to get involved. The caucus also provides safe place for
members’ to discuss concerns and issues.
Caribana Parade/Float
Over the past two years, the
Caucus has had an HIV/AIDS information booth and float at
Caribana to raise funds for the OPSEU “Live and Live” Fund,
which is affiliated with the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The
caucus will continue its work this year at Caribana in order to
highlight the need for prevention and awareness of HIV/AIDS in
our community and Africa.
