Workers of Colour
Caucus to Educate and Raise Money
for HIV/AIDS at
Caribana 2007
August 4, 2007
Download Flyer for event The Workers of Colour Caucus
will be setting up an HIV/AIDS information booth at this year’s 2007 Caribana.
The main purpose of this event is to educate our communities about HIV/AIDS and
to raise money for the “Live and Live” Fund. We plan to distribute condoms,
pins, educational literature and our “Live and Let Live” wristband for a small
donation. Through this work, we hope to highlight the ongoing need for
prevention and awareness of HIV/AIDS locally and internationally.
In Canada, we know that HIV/AIDS
can be managed. While there is no cure, a person’s life can be extended for
several years. Still, not all Canadians have access to the expensive drugs
required or the support they need to overcome alienation and the loss of peer
support. At the same time, children and young people still need preventative
programs and education.
Internationally, we know that
developed countries continue to prevent the affordable sale of those drugs,
continue to poach the few health professionals that are left in developing
countries and have failed to fulfill their commitments to forgive the debt and
commit adequate money to this global health crisis.
Delegates to the 2003 OPSEU Convention voted
unanimously to create the Live and Let Live Fund. Since the 2003 Convention,
members have embarked on fundraising projects in OPSEU locals around the
province.
We know we can make a difference!
The
Workers of Colour booth will be located along the parade route. We invite all
OPSEU members to come out to Caribana parade on August 4rth, visit our booth
and
assist us in making a difference. |
