Injury should not equal poverty!
June 1st is Injured Workers’ Day. It
is a day to collectively celebrate achievements on behalf of injured workers,
learn about current systemic injustices, and rally for better systems of
compensation and support.
On average, the Ontario Workplace Safety and
Insurance Board recognizes 275,000 workplace injury and disease claims per year.
Almost 90,000 of these are serious enough to require time off work. Every year
workers are killed in their workplaces or die as a result of occupational
disease.
These injuries and deaths do not just affect
the workers involved. They affect the worker’s friends, colleagues, and most
importantly, their families. A serious injury can devastate families both
emotionally and financially.
Here is what you can do:
-
increase public awareness of the impact
of work-related injuries, deaths and diseases
-
encourage employers to ensure that their
workplaces are safe and accident free
-
lobby our governments to ensure that
injured workers are supported by a strong workplace safety and insurance
system
Every year there are events across Ontario to
mark Injured Workers’ Day.
Injured workers, their family, friends and supporters are all
invited to attend the following events in their region:
-
REGION 1: 4:30pm – CAW Local 195
Union Hall, 3400 Somme Avenue. Free BBQ.
