2010 Women’s Memorial March draws crowd in London

February 16, 2010

Across Canada this Valentine’s Day many marchers paid tribute to the missing and murdered Aboriginal women, now totaling over 520. Participants are calling for accountability from the government and the police to solve the many cold cases filed away.

Dan Smoke and wife Marylou led the over 200 marchers in London. They spoke to the crowds and media to bring attention to this ongoing issue. Drummers, songs and dance brought a sense of solidarity among the men, women and children. Numerous speakers, some relatives of those missing women, shared their stories of continued grief. Many thanks go to the Native Women’s Association of Canada for sponsoring the 19th Annual March, and I was very proud to participate with my granddaughter in this event.

- Cindy Haynes, Chair, Provincial Women’s Committee.
