The Provincial Women’s
Team Begins its Work
July 6. 2009
In
June, the recently elected PWC held an exceptionally energizing first meeting in
Toronto. The current committee is a blend of both experienced and newly elected
representatives who are all eagerly looking forward to sharing information and
coordinating efforts to further promote women’s issues.
The primary focus of the meeting was the upcoming Women’s
Conference scheduled for November 6 - 8, 2009. The PWC recognizes the
importance of creating opportunities for women to come together to share
experiences, bring women’s issues to the forefront and work collaboratively
towards equality. The conference is being developed with a focus on empowering
women to survive these tough times and to effectively manage what comes their
way.
Participants will be encouraged to network with other women from
across the province, to examine the existing challenges women face and to
discuss issues affecting women, families and communities with a focus on
learning how to succeed with strength and courage towards a better tomorrow. We
will continue our successful BUNDLE UP Campaign, where scarves, mitts, gloves
and hats are collected, and distributed to children in need across the province.
The PWC has committed to recognize March 8
(International Women’s Day), October (Breast Cancer Month) and December
(International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women). Watch for
articles and activities which will show support for these special times relating
to women’s issues.
Our next meeting is to take place by Web
conferencing in August. We look forward to be a part of this modern way of the
techie world, which of course will help with costs, and yet get the work done.
The PWC would like to welcome Deb Tungatt,
Executive Board member for Region 2, as our Board Liaison to this committee.
Deb was a former member of the PWC, and we look forward to her assistance in
supporting our work, and guiding us through the challenges, as we move forward
on a new term.
A special thanks to A/Equity officer Yvonne Bobb,
for her work as staff assigned to our Women’s Committee. Her insight and
assistance was appreciated, and I’m sure we will connect with this activist in
times ahead. Best Wishes, Yvonne!
