“Cookies for gas”: Local 638 members raise $500
to
Save the MNR;
Local 635 hits the front page

The Save the MNR Bake Sale on Dec. 14 was a huge
success for the members of Local 638 in Hearst.
Members from three ministries got together and
baked over 150 plates of various Christmas
goodies. The local distributed posters in town
and contacted the media to advertise this
lunchtime event in the MNR Warehouse. OPSEU
members and members of the community bought
$535.36 worth of home-made goods. Radio Canada,
Journal le Nord, Northern Times and CINN-FM
attended the event to interview Local 638
president Lynn Alary and learn more about the
Save the MNR campaign. The best
photo of the day is of town councilor André
Rhéaume buying cookies from Bonny Fournier and
Yvan Proulx as they put gas in a Conservation
Officer’s truck.
In North Bay, Local 635 steward Dave Fluri made
the front page of the North Bay Nugget and was
on the radio across the north Thursday morning.
Local 635 will stage a photo opportunity for
media in North Bay today to put gas in an MNR
vehicle.
Public support for both events was very high.
MNR offices and Service Ontario received dozens
of calls looking for the bake sales and voicing
their support for the campaign.
