Another call for conservation funding

Ken Hashizume  /  Bayshore Broadcasting  - www.radioowensound.com

The Province needs to fund conservation authorities.

That message was delivered loud and clear at last week's budget meeting when the Saugeen Conservation Authority approved its annual budget, which called for double digit general levy increases.

Chair Doug Freiburger says they have been lobbying the provincial government for funding for years to operate their programs.

Freiburger encourages municipal representatives to approach their MPPs and ask the Ministry of Natural Resources to re-establish the funding.

Freiburger says that is one of the reasons why he wants to run in the upcoming provincial election this fall.

Freiburger says he is passionate about conservation and would like nothing more than to get his hands on those responsible for the cutbacks.

Since 1995 funding from the Province dropped from 85 per cent to 3 per cent.

2nd Vice-Chair Ron Hewitt says that number is disgraceful.

Hewitt says he hopes the Province will wake up and step to the plate.
