OPSEU, MTO agree on Regular Part Time recognition

OPSEU and the Ministry of Transportation reached an agreement on Friday, March 21 to recognize ten “Regular Part Time” classified employees in Driver Examination as “Full Time Classified” employees. The ten employees’ “opt out” severance packages will be dramatically increased as a result.

Conversions outstanding

There are 54 remaining conversion disputes under the Conversion Award and Settlement. Half (27) of those are for members who were converted under the settlement, but have not yet been given an election (choice to opt in and go with the new employer). The majority of the other disputes are about whether unclassified employees with part-time contracts have the required full-time hours in Article 31.15 to convert. We are working on the disputes and expect them all to be completed by the end of April.

OPSEU wins first round

OPSEU won the first round on the policy grievance which demands that employees who made their election in 2001 should get a chance to make a new choice. The Employer tried to knock the grievance out by arguing that the “re-election” issue had been traded away in the conversion settlement, but the Grievance Settlement Board ruled that the Union had done no such thing, and the grievance can go ahead. Any outstanding individual grievances from the DECs are being identified and scheduled for mediation and arbitration as soon as possible.
