DEC transfer to take place Labour Day weekend

The worst kept secret at MTO is out. Serco will be taking over effective Saturday, Aug.30 and will be delivering Driver Examination Services beginning Tuesday Sept. 2.

This confirms the rumours that we have been hearing for some time, that the transfer would take place on Labour Day weekend.

Due to the Conservative government’s discriminatory legislation, DEC staff will be stripped of their collective rights on the same weekend that workers all over Canada remember their struggle to achieve collective rights and celebrate their solidarity as working people.

This is one more proof that the Tory government has neither a heart nor a soul, and should be run out of office as soon as they find the guts to call an election. Shame!

Early surplus possible for education or new job

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has indicated that Driver Exam Centre (DEC) employees can access an early surplus for educational or employment reasons. Those who wish to do so should contact their management. Management will review these requests on a case by case basis. If DEC employees encounter any problems with their request they are asked to contact Judith Marion, OPSEU Job Security, 1-800-268-7376 ext. 370 jmarion@opseu.org .

Minacs takes over call centres

As predicted by OPSEU in an earlier DEC Notes, the call centre work formerly done by MTO has been contracted out. SERCO has subcontracted this work to Minacs Worldwide Inc. The company pays about $11 per hour for a 30 hour a week job.

Minacs has made offers of employment to road test booking centre workers for jobs in Pickering.
