Crystal Ball says look for changes in your future
Since so little information has been forthcoming from either MTO or Serco about the transfer, OPSEU’s Crystal Ball offers the following predictions for Driver Examiner Centre employees.
1. We predict DECs will be transferred effective September 2003. Look for the ads in newsprint, on local television, and radio starting next week.
2. Daily driver examination test frames will increase from the current 20 to 22 per day. Be ready to take on another road test per day. Have an out-of-order? Expect to make up the time. Extras anyone?
3. Don’t let your pass/failure rate exceed the allowable four per cent range for the month and center. At the front counter customers cannot be waiting in line for more than 20 minutes before being served. Serco remains tight-lipped about service standards.
4. Serco will hire roughly 250 new/replacement examiners by September. Training will start immediately. Serco will also be on the search for good performers.
5. Same job, same boss, same problems.
6. Serco announces results of regular salary reviews. Using statistical analysis from comparative market review, Customer Service Representative salaries are downgraded.
7. Serco proudly practises corporate philosophy published on www.serco.com “We are always prepared to discriminate, but only between good performers and poor performers.” More than100 DEC staff denied offers of employment. Poor performers? More “poor performers”
will be let go after 6 months. Performance reviews will not be popular.
8. Scheduling woes continue! Inequity in shifts, hours, and locations. Good performers are recognised; poor performers are not. Discrimination?
9. Serco lives up to its promise of challenge, adventure and a demanding, exciting and rewarding work environment. Examiners clock thousands of travel kilometres. Rewards include no travel time allowance, no overtime provision, no meal allowance, and no business insurance
allowance. Best of all, it’s in your car. Accidents on company time may be interpreted as poor performance, and subject to discriminatory treatment.
10. Serco selects new uniform. Examiners will be permitted to bring their own winter apparel, hats, gloves and safety boots at their own expense. But, your nametag will be free!
Bonus prediction:
Serco develops conflict/resolution process as promised from employee suggestions. Serco selects three managers and appoints three workers to make up team. Committee can’t explain 30 per cent examiner/service representative turnover in the first year.
Since these are predictions only based on our crystal ball, you should contact Serco for clarification, before taking action.OPSEU’s organizing department can help.
