Serco’s offer doesn’t compareSerco DES claims that its offer to you exceeds the benchmarks established under the OPS collective agreement for opt-ins, including the 85 per cent of salary. Serco is saying “trust us for six months.”
Let’s take a long look at what Serco is offering you:
In this table, you can see Serco’s offer on benefits does not match the entitlements your union fought for and won in the OPS Collective Agreement.
You’ll have less insurance, fewer sick days, fewer holidays and vacation days, and will pay more on your drug plan.
No Union? No Collective Rights
Remember, too, that without a union you would no longer have the right to file grievances and have them arbitrated by a third party. You would no longer have the right to bargain collectively. With no collective agreement, the employer can set its own rules for layoffs, job
competitions, promotions, transfers, discipline, and classifications.
Essentially, then, without the union it would be you as an individual up against an employer that you know very little about.
MTO Grievance Update
OPSEU has arranged for grievance mediations in Toronto, London, Kingston, North Bay and Sudbury in April and May with the Ministry of Transportation. These dates should provide mediation on any outstanding individual grievances which have been sent to stage three.
OPSEU continues to work on the outstanding disputes under the December 19, 2002 Conversion settlement. From 83 disputes filed in January, only 18 remain and we hope to have those resolved by the end of April.
The Grievance Settlement Board issued a decision on April 9, 2003 ruling that strike time does not count towards the accumulation of 18 months service for conversion under Article 31.15.
The major effect of the ruling is that 27 members who converted under the settlement in January and February, 2003 will automatically get the enhanced exit package (opt out) without an ‘opt in’ election.
