Serco still doesn’t know what it’s doing with Driver Examiner offices

OPSEU represents you until the transfer actually happens. We want to ensure a smooth transition for you to the new employer.

The OPSEU project team met with the new employer, Serco DES, March 28. Sadly, Serco seemed clueless on key issues. Evidently, Serco still has no human resources plan for Driver Examiner Centres.

They couldn’t provide any answers to our questions about wages, benefits, pensions, working conditions, or office relocations. They have no company pension plan.

In this country, we drive on the right . . .

Serco is a company based in England that does not have a lot of employees here in Canada. They had better figure it out, and fast.

They said they plan to meet with you and will have a web site and a toll-free number at some point in the future. But they still don’t have any real sense of where they are going with wages, working conditions, pensions, benefits, work locations, or other key questions.

As your bargaining agent, OPSEU is very concerned the government has sold you off in a hurry to an outfit that has never done this before and is learning on the job.

Serco said it has hired at least four former Ministry of Transportation (MTO) managers to be senior employees at the DEC operation. If MTO had management problems before, why would things be different now with the same crew in place? With the same management you will need the same strong union, OPSEU to protect your rights.

MTO fails to protect staff from SARS

No-one is happy about a Ministry of Labour ruling on SARS hazards. Driver Examiner Centre staff will have to provide their own masks and gloves to protect themselves. After a three-day work refusal at eight locations, the Ministry of Labour ruled DEC staff were not working in conditions likely to endanger life. MTO still won’t provide any guidelines on how to deal with clients who may have been in contact with SARS.

Pension questions?

There will be a special session Thursday April 3, 5:30-8:30 at the OPSEU Convention, Sheraton Centre, Conference Room E, about your pension benefits, rights and entitlements during the transfer. For information on future presentations, contact Paul Dunseith (as below).
