Local Health Integration Networks

Sample MPP Letter

Dear [MPP Name]:

The government's decision to create 14 Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) could mean a radical change in the way health care will be delivered in Ontario.

At a time when more resources are needed to deliver front line care, I am concerned that existing resources will be diverted towards a major undertaking that may only serve to create further chaos within the system and needlessly increase levels of bureaucracy.

I would ask that any such plan be placed on hold until the public has an opportunity for meaningful input, including whether such reorganization should take place at all.

We need a well-funded public system that is responsive to the community's needs, accountable to its users, and transparent in its operation.

Too often the public is learning that such reorganizations are being done to ease the entry of profit-driven health care providers into the system. When Ontario's home care sector was reorganized, the for-profit share of the system grew dramatically from 18% to 48% in six short years. The result has been a drive to the bottom where quality of care has been sacrificed amid an exodus of skilled and experienced professionals. This is not the kind of healthcare reform we want.

Ontarians do not need any more radical experiments in the delivery of their health care. They need a serious commitment to the principles outlined by the Romanow Commission and the Canada Health Act.

Ontarians, like all Canadians, are proud of their public health care system. I ask you to oppose this plan and ensure the public has input into any future changes to the way health care is delivered.

Yours truly,
