Local Health Integration Networks

December 7, 2005 LHINs may not be here yet, but we have seen the future of hospital services. In Ajax, the Ajax-Pickering site of the Rouge Valley hospital will have its pediatric and obstetric services transferred to Scarborough Dec. 14 – a foreshadowing of things to come under the Liberal Local Health Integration Networks.

More than 1,200 people attended a public meeting in Ajax to protest the planned loss of services which will force mothers and children onto the 401 – if they have a car (there is very little public transit from Ajax or Pickering to the Centennial site at Neilson Road and Ellesmere in Toronto). The two sites are about 20 kilometers apart.

Connie Ferrarra, Local 311 President, spoke on behalf of OPSEU at the meeting. She called the LHINs the “Local Health Disintegration Networks”.
