This report shows that while staff
at Ontario's 25 colleges have the capability and commitment to produce well-educated and
trained graduates, their ability to deliver this service has been steadily eroded by
funding cuts over the past decade.
The paper outlines recent changes in the administration and funding of
the college system and presents the findings of the most comprehensive and
statistically-rigorous survey ever conducted of the college professors themselves. A
stratified random sample interview survey of 517 college professers was used to assess
such important issues as: crowded classes, contact time with students, changes in the
quality of courses offered, the quality of exams and other student evaluations, the
quality of student work, faculty workload and stress levels, job satisfaction and general
college morale.
This unique and timely research was funded in part by the Ontario
Public Service Employees Union.
