Community Colleges Part Time Workers

Are you eligible to join the CAAT Pension Plan?

Many part-time college workers are eligible to participate in the CAAT Pension Plan but may not know it. Effectively July 1, 2002, the CAAT Pension plan was amended to eliminate the minimum earnings requirement. If you have worked, been on vacation or on an authorized leave of absence (with or without pay) in each pay period during the previous 24 months, you may choose to opt in.

Once you join the CAAT Pension Plan, you remain a member until you cease employment with the college.

Once you opt into the CAAT Pension Plan, your college is responsible for making matching contributions to the plan. Not surprisingly, many colleges are reluctant to make their part-time employees aware of this right.

Other than regular full-time employees eligible to opt in include people who:

· work full-time on contract with a predefined end date;

· are sessional employees;

· work less than full-time hours; or

· work less than a full work week.
