MAYWORKS Do the RIGHTS Thing: Part-Time College Workers' Cabaret
Acclaimed jazz performer Hilario Duran joins “Do the RIGHTS thing” line-up: Winner of the 2007 Juno for best Contemporary Jazz album and 2007 National Jazz Awards for Big Band of the Year and Latin Jazz Artist of the Year will make a special guest appearance at the cabaret promoting part-time college workers bargaining rights. Hosted by NOW Best Activist of the Year (2006) and part-time college worker Anna Willats, Do the RIGHTS Thing will showcase the diverse creative talents of professional artists who also work part-time at Ontario colleges. The line-up includes the smooth bluesy rhythms of Up the Line, as well as the multi-talents of musical group Kavli and saxophone player extraordinaire Colleen Allen and her trio. Maja Ardal will perform a piece from her one-woman hit You Fancy Yourself. Susan Allen and partner Susiawan will mesmerize the audience with skilled shadow puppetry. Kirsti Wynne will read from her recent work. Visual artists Margaret Rodgers and Genevieve Nolet will have works on display for your viewing pleasure. Bargaining rights issues: Part-time college workers in Ontario are denied the right to bargain collectively by the provincial Colleges Collective Bargaining Act, which was passed in 1975. Ontario is the only province where part-time college workers are denied this right and college workers are unique in Ontario, where part-time university, health care and liquor store workers, for example, have a right to and do join or form a union. There are currently 17,000 women and men who work part-time in Ontario’s twenty-four community colleges. There are only 15,000 full-time college workers. Co-presented by OPSEU/OPSECAAT.
