Teachers back, students not
“This Monday morning, there is no reason whatsoever our young people
should not be in school attending classes.”
–
Dalton McGuinty, March 24,
2006
Turns out college presidents weren’t really in such a
hurry to get students back in class after all.
As faculty return to work, a quick check of college web
sites shows that just two of the 24 colleges across the province have
full-time students back in class today. Students at St. Clair
(Windsor) are back, as are students at the Oshawa campus of Durham
(although the Whitby campus returns to class Tuesday). Eighteen
colleges return on Tuesday, while four (Georgian, Lambton, Sault, and
Sir Sandford Fleming) are back on Wednesday.
“College management announced their Semester Completion
Strategies 12 days ago,” OPSEU faculty bargaining team chair Ted
Montgomery said in a weekend news release. “It certainly calls into
question their competence if, after 12 days of planning, they can’t
have the colleges up and running on Monday.”
