To OPSEU members at MPAC:
I’m writing to
you on behalf of your bargaining committee. They have asked me to
urge you to vote YES on the protocol your union team has negotiated
with MPAC covering many aspects of bringing in the Futures program
In June, I asked
you to send a strong message to your employer. You gave that message
when you voted, by more than 95 per cent, to do “whatever it takes”
to fight Futures. You showed your trust in OPSEU and your
leadership.
Your vote, and
your actions over the past few months, convinced MPAC to make
radical changes in its reorganization plans. You forced the employer
to come to the table with a list of improvements.
It wasn’t
enough, so your team broke off negotiations in June. You continued
to fight during the summer, both within the workplace and in a
broader public arena.
That
support gave your team the power to return to negotiations in
August. Your backing gave them the clout to get what they believe is
the best possible deal – and significant protection for your job
security and your future work with MPAC. MPAC has agreed there will
be no layoffs. It will use attrition and voluntary exit
opportunities to reduce its workforce. You have new retraining
options, and clearer definition of pay rates. Jobs will be posted
internally. Your options within MPAC are expanded. These changes are
a major victory, since they were achieved outside regular
bargaining.
Your committee
believes that approving the protocol will build a stronger base for
your next round of contract negotiations when your current agreement
expires.
OPSEU has
supported you in this work. Your team has been assisted by Senior
Negotiator Brian Gould and Sector Supervisor Louise Rose. They
wholeheartedly endorse the team's recommendation to vote YES. While
the decision is yours, your committee and the staff involved all
urge you to support it.
Congratulations
on your campaign. We will keep up the fight to prevent our members
from being laid off. You have shown the employer what they can
expect in the next round of bargaining,
In solidarity,
Leah Casselman,
President
