Bargaining stalls as employer files for conciliation

December 21, 2009

Contract talks between the OPSEU and the Niagara Parks Commission have stalled and the employer has filed for conciliation. The union will be seeking a strike mandate from the members in early January (dates to be announced).

Despite the best attempts of the bargaining team, the employer has refused to entertain any substantial union proposals. Citing “philosophical differences,” the employer will not respond to issues such as job security, scheduling, seniority and hours of work…all issues identified as being top priorities for the local.

The employer’s position so far is to table concessions in layoff language, benefits scheduling, leaves and an attempt to introduce a two-tier wage system for seasonal members.

The bargaining team asks that you continue to support your union and attend “Support Your Team and Demands” events that are being planned now. We will keep you posted!
