Chaos and Confusion

February 4, 2002

I am sending you a quick note to express the devastating effects the reorganization of assessment throughout the Province is having on myself, my family, my co-workers and their families (not to mention the service we provide to our customers).

I have been employed in assessment for almost 14 years. Never would I have imagined we’d be at where we are today! I have always taken such pride in the work we do here and the team we are in my office. Now we are surrounded by chaos and stress that is unimaginable!

In the most recent job competitions a 10-minute test on our Intranet that consisted of multiple choice and true-or-false questions decided your fate. If your mark was not good enough, you were not granted an interview regardless of your experience. Then the notification period for interviews for some people was less than 24 hours while others were given more than one week. There are great staff across the province with more than 20 years of experience that didn’t make the cut whereas staff with two years of experience are getting interviews. Where’s the rationale in that? The guidance and expertise that senior staff offer is immeasurable and now we have given many of them the ultimate insult by not even interviewing them. How is a person supposed to recover from such a blow? How is a corporation that is treating their staff in such a manner allowed to continue these unfair practices? Where can we turn for some attention to this matter? You are the Chairman of the Board so I turn to you!

We are real people here with real families and lives and we’re living in turmoil.

I usually start work early, leave late, work through breaks and sometimes lunches. With nearly 14 years invested in Assessment, I have seen many changes. Throughout these changes there has always been pros and cons, negative and positive feedback that come with changes. NEVER, have I ever seen such an unorganized, costly, inconsistent change try and take place. I have not heard one word of positive feedback from anybody about this reorganization. This includes contact from meetings within MPAC, like Futures meetings, contacts within other offices, people within the Institute of Assessors. A change that has no positive feedback cannot be good. This entire process is ludicrous, costly, unjust, unnerving and morally wrong.

Many good people with years of experience, who keep their educations updated, and prevail in their job, have been overlooked. We deserve an explanation and some justification for the choices that have been made.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Maurice, Trenton
